      What to Do

      What to know

      • Marfa is pretty easy to navigate on foot or a quick car ride around. Outside of that,  everything is pretty far apart from each other. Alpine – 30 mins away. Balmorhea – 1 hour, Prada/Valentine – 30 mins. So have that in your mind. Getting around Marfa – no time.
      • The afternoon is a great time to take a nap. You will feel the call to sloooooow down here, and that’s great. Take a nap.
      • Listen to your body. Stay ahead of the hydration. Just take it easy and drink water even if you are not thirsty. Use lotion and chapstick.
      • Groceries – There are three stores (and they close around 8pm). There’s the Dollar General, Porter’s is a decent country grocery store (but it’s soooo much better than it used to be). And then there is the Get Go which is a small high-end grocery (organic items – like a mini whole foods).
      • Nothing is open on Monday, or Sunday or Tuesday, or whenever they feel like it for that matter.
      • Food. It is expensive to eat out there and takes forever (what’s your hurry y’all). So know that going in. Plan when you wanna spend the $ and time eating out.
      • Frama!!! They have good coffee, ice cream, INTERNET and laundry. The nitro cold brew is BOMB! There are several coffee shops in town…no shortage there.
      • INTERNET: It’s so much better than it used to be. You should not have any problems when you are in town.
      • The light here!!! OMG, shoot shoot shoot photos. You will get home and see how magical this light is. Stop and just notice how it rests on the ground. It’s pretty damn stunning.
      • At night, it’s DARK!!! Be mindful if you are walking at night – a few years ago my husband and I kept running into a very serious Skunk at the courthouse.
      • Sticker season is wicked. The courthouse has the best sticker free grass for pets and picnics.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      • How many CEUs are included?  – Well, none. What we will be learning and implementing is not something the APA recognizes as important for the field. This event is for YOU. Not your practice. Not your agency. Not your family. This event is for you to be able to keep working. It is my belief that you do not need CEUS if you are burned out & quitting counseling or worse, Dead.
      •  Is a place to sleep included? No – you get to choose the bed and sleeping set up that works for you. The St. George has great rooms. Hotel Paisano is beautiful, too. Airbnb is excellent, as Marfa is a hospitality town. If you like to camp, check out El Cosmico.
      • Are all the meals included? Most are but not all. Dinners are on your own. This gives you the chance to experience the town of Marfa by enjoying local foods and supporting local restaurants.
      • I’m queer. Am I welcome? HELL Yes. AND Marfa is a safe town to visit. Locals don’t care, as several locals are queer.
      • I’m in recovery. Am I welcome? Hell Yes. We do not have alcohol at the HQ house or in our meeting space at the St. George. People are welcome to drink on their own time and at the pool party, but outside of that, we are holding our spaces to be a safe space for folx.
      • I’m a person of color. Am I welcome? Hell Yes. Our retreat is as safe of a space as possible for BIPOC clinicians. For a small town, Marfa is way more inclusive and welcome than a traditionally small Texas town.
      • I’m trans or non-binary. Am I welcome? Hell Yes. This space is created with your needs in mind. We do not have a binary mindset and will create a space for those likeminded to share the space.
      • I have special needs. Am I welcome? Hell Yes. Reach out to Dr. Blythe to make sure we can accommodate your needs. The list of cants is not long.
      • I’m a cisgender heterosexual white dude. Am I welcome? We don’t see how this camp would be a fit for your needs. Feel free to reach out to Dr. Blythe to chat it out, but in general this retreat space is sacred and layered with vulnerabilities typically not conduce to your kind.
      • I’m unvaccinated. Am I welcome? No. Even if it’s not by choice, no. We have an agreement to only invite people who are vaccinated with at least three shots to the town of Marfa and to share space with us. The town of Marfa was the most vaccinated small town in Texas through much of the pandemic. Covid cases are minimal throughout. Well done Marfa! We honor that good work and will not take a risk  now.
      • I’m racist and want things to continue in an oppressive manner. Am I welcome? No.
      • Is a car necessary? Not to get around Marfa. The town is easy to walk around, as it’s only a mile or two large. However, there is no easy way to get to Marfa without a car.
      • What is the best way to get to Marfa?  The closest airport is in El Paso, Tx. It is about a 3 hour drive from Marfa. It’s DARK if you are headed out to town after dark. There is an Amtrak train that goes to Alpine, but not everyday of the week. If you take the train, we can certainly come and get you, no problem.
      • Want to come early via Amtrak and stay in an Airbnb? No problem. Dr. Blythe lives in Marfa part time and can come get you from Alpine, easy. If she is busy, she can ask a friend to run over and pick you up, no big deal. It’s totally OK to come early or stay extra and really infuse rest and repair.
